Danger Will Robinson. This post is insanely long showcasing what a true Canadian winter looks like. None of that sunny or raining west coast weather.

Point Pelee (pronounced ‘ee’ at the end not ‘eh’ as I found out) is a national park and just happens to be the farthest south you can go in Canada. Even as far south as Barcelona or Rome, crazy! Yet when I froze my face, had my hair whipped in every direction causing me to stumble along in the slush filled path it was hard for me to think I on the same latitude of places that remind me of warmth … what was that again? Nope, can’t remember what warmth means.

The point itself juts into Lake Erie and is tossed around between a warm and cold current on each side. It felt weird looking out at a lake and not seeing the other side, no wonder why they call them great. With the s shape of sand and ice on each side, with a soft purple glow in the horizon I couldn’t help but feel like I was staring at some barren wasteland up in the Arctic. What does warmth mean? Instead of a place that is known as an ecological haven for migratory birds and butterflies.

It happened to be gorgeous in it’s snowy glory though, which may be why this is one of the longest posts I have ever done. I couldn’t stop picking and choosing photos I wanted to showcase. I will let the photos do the talking.

I find the beach relaxing. If I could live there 24/7 I probably would, heck if I could live on a sailboat 24/7 and make a living I would. I have a water spirit through and through (who wouldn’t be if you live on the west coast of Canada). So one of the things I had to do while I was on the east coast was actually touch the Atlantic Ocean. I know something so small, but I’ve been on the furthest point on the west and east of the Atlantic Ocean, but I’ve never actually touched it. Then as I was there on Plum Island I realized within 6 months of each other I’ve seen the Pacific AND the Atlantic oceans, seen each side of the US. How cool is that?

Plum Island is documented as early as 1616 as an unnamed island on the map of Captain John Smith, in which he names New England. Today it’s a popular tourist destination holding B&B’s and hotels, but some local residents call this place home.

Beaches up here tend to be rocky, slimy with kelp and smells like the ocean. Nothing compared to this sandy dune ridden beach. The smell of the sea? Nowhere. But I still enjoyed it none the less, even spent 10 minutes just starting out to sea.

Just to get it out of the way, since I’m sure a lot of you noticed my random disappearance to the east coast in the middle of winter. Normally I’m one to write all about my trip, what was fun, what wasn’t but when it comes to my love life everyone around me can assure you I’m one to clam up pretty tight. I don’t know I’m not one to gush and spread the news, just not that type.

Let’s just say I went to Boston for a boy.

I came to the conclusion that I’m never going to just go to the airport and take the next flight out. A) I’m the planning type, I don’t like last minute things and B) Last minute flights in North America are hella expensive (did I just type the word hella ….) This whole trip pretty much goes against the norm for me. In less than a week of knowing about it I flew across the continent for a week, than within 24 hours I bought tickets and flew to Windsor, Ontario. I went through Toronto airport three times in two weeks and have explored pretty much every inch a passenger can of that airport going from their National to International terminals … and there and back again a Heather Mulholland story.

Day two of the special two part Sunday Recipes. If you missed the Texan Beef Brisket from yesterday, go over here to see the deliciousness. I think my favourite of the two was definitely the Smoked Tuscan Chicken, I couldn’t stop eating a chunk here and there, while eating some fantastic coleslaw and a piece or two of cornbread. (Mike had to stop me before I overate on the cornbread.) The chicken came out incredible moist and flavourful and I almost wish we had leftovers to make enchiladas or some other fabulous Mexican food. Instead every bit of the chicken and brisket was eaten by the group a feeling most welcome as a chef.

I have to say, a food shoot goes so much easier when you aren’t the one cooking. That way I can just document instead of picking up my camera, putting down my camera, chop chop, shoot, stir stir, click. Thank you Mike.
